  • The Swiss Solution

Here we are in Berne, Switzerland.

Land of gourmet chocolate, precision watches, …. and the lowest rate of youth unemployment in the developed world — 2.8%.

Compare that to the youth unemployment rate in Canada — just shy of 15%.

In our country young people invest years and tens of thousands of dollars in higher education that leaves them floundering and unable to find work after they graduate.

This is virtually unheard of in Switzerland. And we wanted to find out why.

After 3 whirlwind days of interviews and filming, we came away with clarity about what makes their system work, and some great advice for how we could do things differently in Canada.

On our last evening, we celebrated the end of our shoot by taking part in a Berne tradition — jumping into Aare River and letting the surprisingly swift current carry us downstream. We were told to “watch out for the whirlpools” close to the river’s banks.

<img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2111" src="http://dreamfilm.ca/wp-content/uploads/1blogd-240×163.jpg" alt="" width="240" height="163" srcset="http://dreamfilm.ca/wp-content/uploads/1blogd-240×163.jpg 240w, http://dreamfilm.ca/wp-content/uploads/1blogd-217×147 quien receta la viagra.jpg 217w, http://dreamfilm.ca/wp-content/uploads/1blogd.jpg 318w, http://dreamfilm.ca/wp-content/uploads/1blogd-220×149.jpg 220w” sizes=”(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px” />The trickiest part of the Aare is the exit. It’s the responsibility of each swimmer to make their way to one of six sets of stairs on the side of the river — grab hold and clamber out. What we didn’t realize until later is that a few hundred yards past the final set of stairs, the river narrows and violently churns before it roars over a dam, where bodies have occasionally been fished out! The experience was both exhilarating and really scary.

Luckily, we managed to avoid drowning! And that means we’re able to tell our viewers all that Canada can learn from Switzerland.
